'Usual suspects' already battling at the foot of the Premier League mountain

Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola says in-form Raheem Sterling is no longer a "scared player" while the England star explained why he opted to set Leroy Sane up for a goal despite being on a hattrick.

United have scored 14 fewer goals than City in the Premier League this season and the addition of Sane would significantly boost their attacking threat, but the Germany worldwide was unequivocal in his response to the suggestion of what would be a controversial move.

Manchester City cruised to victory over a sorry Southampton side to return to the top of the Premier League. They settled for six goals in the end - the fourth time in 11 Premier League games that they have scored at least five times in a game - and might easily have scored more had the occasion demanded more ruthlessness.

The forward scored on what was also his 217th league appearance for City, who he joined from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

Aguero has achieved a number of goalscoring highs for City in the previous year, becoming the club's all-time top goalscorer against Napoli in November 2017.

Saints did get one back on the half-hour mark, with Danny Ings converting from the penalty spot after the striker was felled in the box by Ederson.

"I don't think we were confronted with lots of goal chances and we kept them at bay pretty well, but they were clinical".

It was unlikely that City were ever going to need much help seeing off Saints, but Wesley Hoedt charitably gave them an early advantage as he turned into his own goal with just six minutes played.

City won 32 of their 38 games last season, scoring a record 106 goals and amassing a record 100 points.

Chelsea reacted by bringing on dangerman Eden Hazard and Mateo Kovacic for Willian and Ross Barkley, and within minutes the home team was back in front in the London derby. "Maybe one day they don't score, and then the team doesn't score at all".

"That guy is always looking out for me".

Guardiola believes Sterling will add to his astonishing haul of 46 caps, but feels he has room to improve at the age of 23 in his bid to be rated among the world's finest players.
