Bob Corker said that the USA should punish Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman if an investigation concludes he was behind the death of Jamal Khashoggi.

Eighteen men were in custody over the killing, the kingdom said on Saturday, as it also announced the sacking of two top aides of MBS as well as three other intelligence officials.

Riyadh said he was killed in a fist fight in the consulate.

Turkish pro-government media had said for days that an official hit squad had traveled from Saudi Arabia to kill Khashoggi.

"Why did these 15 people come here? These things have to be told in detail", he said, referring to Riyadh's announcement on Saturday that 18 people had been arrested in connection with the incident.

President Donald Trump says he needs to learn more about the killing of a Saudi journalist and will be working with Congress on the US response. In the past, such exports have mostly consisted of patrol boats.

The Istanbul governor's office has put Ms Cengiz, a Turkish national, under 24-hour police protection, Anadolu said.

The evolving explanation comes 19 days after Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist who had been critical of his country's current government, disappeared on October 2 after going into the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The images, taken from security camera video, show the writer being searched before continuing toward the building.

A leading Republican US senator said he believed the Crown Prince was behind the killing, adding that the Saudis had lost all credibility in their explanations of his death.

"The individuals who did this did this outside the scope of their authority. There obviously was a tremendous mistake made, and what compounded the mistake was the attempt to try to cover up", Jubeir said.

"That is unacceptable in any government".

Labour, the SNP, the Lib Dems, Plaid Cymru and the Greens said it was "hard to imagine what crime the Saudi government would need to commit" to earn a rebuke from the UK Government, the Guardian reported. The killing was a "shocking violation" of an global treaty on consular relations, the European Union foreign service said.

For Saudi Arabia's allies, the question will be whether they believe that the Crown Prince, who has painted himself as a reformer, has any culpability.

Trump has been criticized for his response to Khashoggi's killing at the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul. "We don't know where the body is", he said.

Mr Trump has repeatedly said over the last week that he opposes any effort to impede more than $100 billion in United States arms sales to Saudi Arabia, but that he would consider sanctions on the kingdom. "I note that the Saudi authorities have changed tack, admitted the facts and accepted some responsibility, so we are making progress", he added. "I will make a detailed statement in an address to the [parliamentary AKP] fraction on Tuesday", the president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

Corker did not call for an end to arms sales to Saudi Arabia, but others have.

"Those responsible for the killing must be held to account and must face justice".
