Ashraf Naalwa, 23, from the northern West Bank village of Shuweika, has been named by the Israeli army as the Palestinian behind Sunday's attack in the occupied West Bank industrial area of Barkan where two Israelis were killed and a third wounded.

Magen David Adom emergency medical services said their medics had entered a building at Barkan where they found a man and woman, both without a pulse, and pronounced them dead.

The third victim, a woman in her 50s, was moderately wounded and taken to Petah Tikva's Beilinson Hospital for treatment.

The Palestinian used a homemade gun in the attack, known locally as a Carlo, according to Conricus.

It said security forces "arrested" an unspecified number of people "suspected of aiding the terrorist" while a manhunt for the gunman was still underway.

He was certain the perpetrator would be caught and brought to justice. Closed-circuit footage from the scene showed a man holding a handgun and wearing a backpack, fleeing down a flight of stairs and then dashing past stunned onlookers.

Hamas, the militant group that controls the Gaza Strip - the other main Palestinian territory - called the attack a "heroic operation".

The industrial zone is located next to the Israeli settlement Barkan and near the settlement of Ariel in the north of the West Bank.

A manager at another company in the industrial zone, Moshe Lev-Ran, suggested the attack might not have been politically motivated.

At his weekly Cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said they had been killed "with great cruelty".

He held a valid work permit and had been absent from work in the days leading up to the attack, the army said.

"No way in our industrial zone", he said, describing an atmosphere of camaraderie in Barkan".

More than 600,000 Jews live in about 140 settlements built since Israel's 1967 occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

The army has launched an investigation into how Na'alwa was able to smuggle his weapon into the gated industrial park and into whether he had bound Levengrond Yehezkel with the intention of taking her hostage.

A number of attacks have occurred at that location, the Gush Etzion Junction.
