Guardiola apologised to Jesus afterwards and the 21-year-old Brazil global insisted he felt confident to take the penalty.

"If somebody would have told me after eight match-days we would have had 20 points, I would say with pretty much any fixture list I'd have said "yes".

Liverpool played out a 0-0 draw with Champions Man City yesterday, meaning that both teams and Chelsea sit joint top of the table on 20 points as we head into the global break.

Asked if Sunday's stalemate shows they are closer to catching City, he said: "I think it is not about these games, it is all about the other games, the hard games which we have against mid-table and lower teams".

Jurgen Klopp's men played out a 0-0 draw with Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday, with Riyad Mahrez missing a late penalty for the visitors.

"Stones and Laporte are good and they are so young but they need experience in games like today on big stages like Anfield against maybe the most risky three strikers in the world".

"It was not smart from me personally and hopefully it will never happen again", he said.

The point allowed City to regain top spot from Chelsea, who had briefly taken over after their win over Southampton earlier in the day, but their opponents dropped to third.

And with that, he's missed four of his last six penalty kicks.

"At 85 minutes you get a bit tired, and that moment goes by in a split second and I chose to dive in, which is not what I would normally do".

'We made it hard for them and they made it hard for us at times but that's how it is.

"We've had a great start to the season and we want to keep it going".

"Against a very good team we managed to do that".

The Merseyside outfit have faced all of City, Chelsea and fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur inside their last seven games - during which time they've also taken on Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli in the Champions League. However, it was important that we didn't lose. After a tough trip away to Napoli in the Champions League where the front three just didn't click, Liverpool again looked quite boring in attack.

"As a back four, that's what we go into every game going for".
