Barcelona were in their best form on Tuesday night as they defeated vising PSV in their first Champions League game of 2018/19 season in which Messi netted the first goal via a free kick.

After winning the Europa League last season, Atletico Madrid are targeting Champions League glory with the final to be played in their own stadium.

The hosts had Badou Ndiaye sent off in the 87th for a second booking but increased the margin of victory in stoppage time courtesy of a Selcuk Inan strike.

These were not half chances either, Steven Bergwijn's curling effort whistled whiskers past the post, while Gaston Pereiro's half volley would have stung the back of the net if it was just a couple of inches lower.

"Dembele is doing well and is scoring important goals but that comes from hard work", Valverde said.

He curled the ball over the PSV wall from 25 metres out into the top corner beyond the reach of goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet.

The maestro showed his full range of skills once again with this hat-trick against Ajax, the first goal of which came with a stunning free kick in off the post. The numbers certainly back him up. "We're seeing something unique, something that hasn't been seen in many years". It was his eighth free-kick scored in 2018. He's improved, all right.

The free-kick was made from 20 yards.

Red Star Belgrade ground out a 0-0 home draw against Napoli on the Serbian side's Champions League debut.

Barcelona have been drawn in a tough group alongside PSV, Tottenham and Inter Milan but they're heavy favourites to progress to the last-16. He has overtaken the reins of Barcelona after the departure of Andre Iniesta and manager Ernesto Valverde also couldn't stop praising the new captain. Their performance at Camp Nou suggests that, while his comments may be proved wrong come December, they could be the group's surprise package.

In the first period they successfully shut down most of Barca's attacks and also plotted several unsafe breaks, which led to Mexico worldwide Hirving Lozano firing narrowly over the bar after the interval.
