Peter Dinklage wins Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama!

The 70th Emmy Awards, television's equivalent of the Oscars, opened Monday with an edgy flurry of jokes about diversity in Hollywood, Donald Trump, race and the pervasive issue of sexual harassment in the entertainment industry.

In the writing category, Sherman-Palladino topped Glover again, as well as Stefani Robinson ("Atlanta"), Alec Berg ("Silicon Valley"), Alec Berg and Bill Hader ("Barry") and Liz Sarnoff ("Barry").

Johansson arrived to the red carpet with her SNL star boyfriend Colin Jost, who would later be co-hosting the Emmys with his Weekend Update co-anchor Michael Che. Jill Soloway was the most recent woman to win the comedy directing Emmy (for "Transparent") in 2016.

This year, HBO's fantasy series Game Of Thrones won the best drama prize for a third time and was the most-honoured show with nine awards in total.

Regina King was an unexpected limited series victor for playing the mother of a black teen killed by a white police officer in Seven Seconds. Bledel won the guest drama actress award in 2017, while Dowd won supporting then.

A surprise marriage proposal from Emmy-winning director Glenn Weiss won over the audience - and the internet.

I love you, and I share this with you, because you are an awesome, handsome brother. "It's because I want to call you my wife", Weiss said.

And "Saturday Night Live" won the award for best variety sketch series.

"Saturday Night Live" cast members Kate McKinnon and Kenan Thompson did a jokey song and dance number titled "We Solved It". It marked the first time a streaming service had won in the category.

"I'll be thanking you for the rest of my life for trusting me with your Midge", she said, referencing her character.

Other big winners included FX's The Assassination of Gianni Versace, which won Emmys for best limited series and best lead actor in a limited series for Darren Criss, who took a dark turn as the designer's killer Andrew Cunanan.
