The Dallas Police Department and the District Attorney's Office are conducting a joint investigation. She was confronted by a man, identified by the Medical examiner's office as Botham Shem Jean.

The officer said "she entered into the victim's apartment believing it was her own apartment and at some point she pulled her weapon and shot the victim", Sgt. Warren Mitchell, a Dallas police spokesman, said at a news conference outside of the apartment complex where the killing took place.

Dozens of people gathered on a rain-soaked Friday to mourn the passing of Botham Shem Jean. Allison said she didn't want to judge the woman who killed her son, but that the police department's vague explanations left her grappling for clarity and comfort.

"Somebody has to be insane not to realize that they walked into the wrong apartment", Allison Jean, who lives in the family's native St. Lucia, told NBC News. "The second goal of the vigil is to demand the special treatment of this officer be ended".

Paramedics arrived on the scene about four minutes later and took Jean to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"I've spoken with the family expressed my condolences and reassured them that we are working diligently and that we have invited an outside agency to investigate", said DPD Chief Reneé Hall.

Young King Solomon Grayson runs in front of a makeshift memorial for Jean in front of DPD headquarters.

The officer was not injured during the incident. "This is a person who murdered another human being". We have not interviewed her...

Jean had graduated from a private Christian college in Arkansas in 2016 and had since been working at the accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas.

Neighbours said they can access their building with a regular key or by using a keypad code.

Mourners carried signs with slogans that read "Have a trial when police kill" and "Where is justice when police kill us?" "End police brutality", "Disarm off duty police". But given what investigators now know about the case, they made a decision to pursue a manslaughter case, police said. If there were DPD officers at the vigil, they did not make their presence known.

They say Jean was an alum who "frequently led worship for chapel and for campus events". Please join us in praying for Botham's friends & family.

"I never heard my mother cry like that", he said.

"We're all deeply grieved", Jana Rucker said.
