Woods, Mickelson in US Ryder Cup team

With those chilling words from Bryson Dechambeau, Phil Mickelson's uneasy stare and Tiger Woods' beaming smile, the USA's three wildcard picks for the 2019 Ryder Cup were announced. "Never will", DeChambeau said after finishing at 16-under 268 to claim his second straight $1.62 million first prize.

DeChambeau emerged on Monday as the hottest commodity in the game at the moment, becoming the first player this season on the PGA Tour to win back-to-back events with another commanding performance at TPC Boston.

"Consistency has been a big thing for me", he said in a greenside interview after joining compatriots Justin Thomas, Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson as three-times winners this season. ‎He is the first player to win the first two legs of the FedEx Cup playoffs since Vijay Singh in 2008 and the first to win in consecutive weeks since Justin Thomas in January 2017.

"I wanted to be a part of this experience so badly that I worked twice as hard", DeChambeau said. Furyk invited him as part of a small group that played Le Golf National on the weekend before the British Open. I got the call from Jim and he asked if I would serve as a vice-captain and I said 'Absolutely'. He has risen from 656 to 26 in the world this year. Smith was third at 13-under, a bogey at the final hole knocking him out of contention.

"So fortunate also that it's the day before the Ryder Cup picks, although I don't feel that should be a bearing", Mickelson said.

Earlier, Marc Leishman carded two late birdies in his 71 that, while dropping him to 21 today, was good enough to rise to 22 overall on the FedEx Cup standings and effectively ensure his place in Atlanta, as well. The 27-year-old Mexican did improve from No. 92 to No. 56 and into the top 70 who advance to the BMW Championship at Aronimink next week.

Heading into a press conference to announce three of his four wildcard picks, Furyk already had a ridiculously talented and steely collection. Mickelson, who has played on every Ryder Cup team since 1995, boosted his case by winning a World Golf Championships event in Mexico in March, and he made nine birdies Monday in a closing round of 63.

As expected, Furyk named Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau to the USA team that will play the Europeans Sept. 28-30 at Le Golf National outside of Paris. 9, 10 and 11 in points when qualifying ended for eight automatic berths after the PGA Championship.
