Hamilton surprised by Vettel's moves

Hamilton then twice overtook Kimi Raikkonen, who had started on pole, to dampen the spirits of Ferrari fans who had turned out in droves in the hope of celebrating a first home win in eight years. Hamilton, however, took advantage of a slipstream off Vettel's Ferrari before lining up a move on his championship rival at turn four.

Hamilton's sixth win of the season lifted him to 256 points, to his German rival's 226, with seven races still ahead.

"Unfortunately I was the one that spun around, which was a bit ironic".

Raikkonen is Vettel's rear-gunner at Ferrari, 85 points behind Hamilton, and out of the title race. Then I had room left and no chance anymore.

"Well I think you had more angles than I had but I tried to pass Kimi and then he put on the brakes and then I didn't really have a gap and I didn't want to try something silly", Vettel said.

"I think it was 100 per cent Sebastian's fault", Rosberg said on Sky Sports commentary.

Bottas finished third just ahead of Vettel and Verstappen, who would have been on the podium had he not received a five-second penalty for causing a collision with the Finnish driver. So, when I touched Lewis, I span around and that was unfortunate, as my auto got quite some damages.

He insisted his conviction that Ferrari was now faster than Mercedes meant the fact his championship deficit to Hamilton was the biggest it had been all year was nothing to be concerned about.

"I'm really happy I've been able to extract more from the auto and hopefully make that little bit of a difference".

"For sure I'm down at the moment but mostly for the people [here]. But I think given I was looking the wrong way after four corners and in last (place), finishing in fourth with effectively the same strategy as everybody else is a decent recovery with the damage we had".

"It was unfortunate for us to get spun around and have a lot of damage but it could have been also him that spins around and us carrying on".

As Vettel dropped to the back of the field and needed a new front wing after the collision, Hamilton admitted it was a crucial incident in allowing him to focus on Raikkonen. However, he said that he's "not too worried" about the championship situation. "Then I got used to it and drove around it but when I got out of the auto I was surprised myself".

Hamilton admits it has been tough to fight with Ferrari in recent races, but Mercedes are pushing as hard as they can to reclaim their position at the top of the pile, and he knows that they will be putting everything they can into this weekend's race.
