A French judicial official says rape and sexual assault accusations against actor Gerard Depardieu are the subject of a preliminary investigation it was reported on today.

The 69-year-old star denies the allegations "absolutely", his lawyer told AFP news agency yesteday.

One of France's most prolific actors, Depardieu (69) has been in about 170 movies through his career and gained global recognition in 1990 with his starring role in the English language comedy Green Card.

Depardieu has had a prolific acting career, including over 170 film titles.

A 27-year-old actress accused Besson of raping her in a Paris hotel in May, reports CBS News.

The woman, who said she knew Depardieu before the attack, claims the Cryano de Bergerac actor raped her at one of his Paris residences.

A lawyer said the French film star denies the allegations.

According to the BBC, the unnamed actress initially made a statement to police in Lambesc, southern France, and the case was then passed to prosecutors in Paris.

"He will obviously participate in the investigation and answer the questions", Temime said. He rose to worldwide fame when he bagged a Golden Globe for his 1990 role as Georges in the romantic comedy Green Card.

In recent years, Depardieu has hit headlines for his friendship with Russia's Vladimir Putin and his criticism of the French government.
