Flake swipes at Trump over McSally support

She also controversially said Tuesday night that the race was a contest "between a patriot and a protester".

President Donald Trump says he hasn't heard remarks by Florida GOP gubernatorial nominee Rep. Ron DeSantis that critics argue were a racially charged attack on his Democratic opponent.

The DeSantis-Gillum matchup will be closely watched for clues about the mood of voters and messaging ahead of 2020, when Trump could be seeking re-election against a liberal Democrat. I assume that Gillum has the African-American vote in his pocket and that, with the chance to elect an African-American governor and with a hot Senate race to vote in, Black turnout will be substantial with or without the outrage being feigned over DeSantis' comment.

DeSantis made the comment at 9:36 a.m. while appearing on Fox News following his victory in the Republican primary.

"Ron DeSantis was obviously talking about Florida not making the wrong decision to embrace the socialist policies that Andrew Gillum espouses".

Rep. Martha McSally (R., Ariz.) embraced Trump on the campaign trail to win the Arizona U.S. Senate Republican primary and easily beat challengers from the hard right who had engendered considerable controversy: Sheriff Joe Arpaio and State Senator Kelli Ward.

In an interview with The Associated Press he added: "I think the Florida electorate is going to reject the politics of division".

Gillum ran to the left of his Democratic opponents in the primary, calling for Medicare for all, a $15-an-hour minimum wage and the abolishment of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

Gillum faces Republican U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis, who also won by turning out his Trump-supporting base to defeat the once-favorite Adam Putnam.

Progressives were noticeably thrilled with Gillum's achievement, and most marked it as a significant step forward for "Democratic socialists" and evidence of progressive cache within the Democratic Party, but there are concerns.

In a statement from DeSantis' campaign made to Fox News, the campaign dismissed these characterizations as "absurd".

DeSantis is a disciple of the Trump "Make America Great Again" agenda and regularly defends the president against criticism.

"There is not a profit margin in the state of Florida that ought to be able to rob us of those elements: clean water, clean air, good oceans", Gillum said.

But he hadn't formally endorsed her until the next morning.

In a state whose electoral votes went to Trump, the Republican nominee could use voters' support for the president to their advantage.

"Well, in the handbook of Donald Trump they no longer do full whistle calls, they do full bullhorns", Gillum said. Gillum is mayor of the city of Tallahassee and Trump said Gillum has "allowed crime and many other problems to flourish in the city".

Gillum never tried to win over centrist Democrats in his quest for the gubernatorial nomination - defying the general political wisdom in the country's largest purple state. Just days before Tuesday's primary, Sen.
