Multiple dead in Florida shooting at Jacksonville mall

POLICE in America have reported multiple fatalities following a mass shooting in Jacksonville, Florida.

The latest rampage occurred amid a debate over US gun laws that was given fresh impetus by the massacre in February of 17 people at a high school in Parkland, Florida.

Florida has seen several mass shootings in recent years, including at the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando in 2016, when 49 people died.


Three patients were taken to Memorial Hospital, all of whom are in stable condition. Six others were transported to the hospital in serious or good condition, three shot once and three shot a few times.

A competitor at Sunday's tournament told the LA Times on Sunday that the shooter was a participant who had been disqualified earlier in the day, but authorities have not confirmed the testimony.

In Washington, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said President Donald Trump had been briefed on the attack and the White House was monitoring the situation.

The game is a big deal - last year, three million players took part in the Madden Championship Series and there'll be $US700,000 up for grabs at the Madden NFL 19 Club Championship - but this particular event was relatively small in scale.

Cloud9, a professional gaming organization based in Los Angeles, California, said it was deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic events: "Our hearts and deepest condolences go out to the victims, families, and all those affected by today's violence", the organization said on Twitter.
