After Trump's joint press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in July, in which Trump did not endorse USA intelligence findings on Russian election meddling over Putin's denial, McCain said: "The damage inflicted by President Trump's naivete, egotism, false equivalence, and sympathy for autocrats is hard to calculate". Instead, Vice-President Mike Pence is expected to attend.

While tributes have poured in highlighting the Arizona Republican's lifetime of service, Trump issued a single, terse tweet on Saturday that sent his "deepest sympathies and respect" to the bereaved family, without any words for McCain himself.

Over the past year and a half of his life, McCain was one of President Trump's biggest opponents, appearing to put his beliefs of what he thought was best for America, over partisan politics.

McCain's daughter Meghan was sharply critical of the congresswoman this month after she mimicked Trump and neglected to mention the full name of the "John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act". Like the late senator, she's a former fighter pilot - one of the first women to fly in combat and an air force colonel.

Both Vietnamese people and US citizens in Hanoi have flocked to the grey, concrete monument to offer flowers, incense, flags and other tributes to McCain.

"Honoring the memory and legacy of Senator John McCain, an American patriot, who served our great nation with distinction", Ivanka wrote.

As a fervent Atlanticist, a persistent critic of authoritarian leaders, and a frequent congressional traveler, he earned respect around the globe.

Arpaio, meanwhile, has spent as much time coming up with creative ways to imprison immigrants as McCain has spent seeking compromises on border enforcement. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he was "an inspiration to millions".

A private burial service next Sunday will conclude almost a week of events honoring the Navy aviator, prisoner of war, congressman, longtime senator and presidential contender.

Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama issued a statement sending their "heartfelt condolences" to McCain's wife, Cindy and their family. McCain rose above politics and represented his values. Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer said he would seek to rename a Senate building in his honor.

McCain visited Vietnam several times after diplomatic ties were restored in 1995 and one of his jailers remembered him fondly, saying he would have voted for him in his failed 2008 presidential bid. And comments on the USA far-right Breitbart website slammed the senator for his key vote against the Obamacare repeal.

McCain, 81, died on August 25 after a yearlong battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer. A private service and burial are scheduled for the next day at McCain's beloved United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland.
