McCain was the unsuccessful Republican candidate for the 2008 presidential election and was an active voice in USA foreign policy debate, as Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee from January 2015 until his death.

The video shows him speaking about Barack Obama.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a very close friend of McCain at the senate, said: "America and Freedom have lost one of her greatest champions".

Presidents and lawmakers from both parties honored Sen.

Tsai said in a tweet on August 26 "I'll remember John McCain as a friend & a fighter".

Paying tribute to his one-time election opponent, Obama said in a statement he and McCain, despite their "completely different backgrounds" and political differences, shared "a fidelity to something higher - the ideals for which generations of Americans and immigrants alike have fought, marched and sacrificed".

McCain is expected to be remembered at ceremonies in Arizona and Washington this coming week or next, if the family prefers to give more time for Congress to return to the Capitol from its summer recess.

On January 17, 2012, McCain, along with four other USA senators, visited the Philippines and met with then President Benigno Aquino III and former Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario where they discussed wide-range of issues, foremost of which were the freedom of navigation and the South China Sea or the West Philippine Sea. Before joining the upper chamber, he served as a United States representative from 1983 to 1987.

John McCain has been described as a man with a quiet faith. "May you Rest In Peace".

"As you go through life, you meet few truly great people".

His family announced on Friday that McCain was discontinuing further cancer treatment.

Friends and colleagues traveled to Arizona to bid McCainfarewell in the months since his cancer diagnosis in July 2017.

In September past year, Cayetano recalled his meeting with McCain at the Capitol Hill where they discussed the challenges confronting Manila and Washington, and how the partnership can be further strengthened to address nontraditional security concerns, such as drug trafficking and violent extremism.

The senator is survived by his mother, Roberta; his wife, Cindy; two sons and a daughter from a first marriage, Douglas, Andrew and Sidney; four children from his second marriage, Meghan McCain, Jimmy McCain, Jack McCain and Bridget McCain; a brother, Joseph McCain; a sister, Jean McCain Morgan; and five grandchildren.

McCain went on to become a "maverick" of the Republican Party and longtime giant of the Senate over his decades-long career.

McCain died after the deadline to file for this year's election, and as a result, the successor-senator would not have to face re-election until the 2020 election.
