Saturday's win was Emery's first at Arsenal after the opening the Premier League season with consecutive defeats to Manchester City and Chelsea.

Arsenal, though, responded quickly with a goal from Nacho Monreal, before a second-half own goal from Issa Diop and a Danny Welbeck clincher in injury time left the Hammers still searching for a first point under new boss Manuel Pellegrini.

The quick-fire equaliser from Monreal was the turning point of the game and allowed the fans packed inside the Emirates Stadium to get right back behind the team.

Unai Emery has denied a rift taking place between himself and Mesut Ozil, insisting that the German global missed the match because of illness and nothing more.

Instead, he started Aaron Ramsey in an advanced role with Alex Iwobi and Henrikh Mkhitaryan playing wide.

Welbeck played only one game for England at the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation and has emerged as a target for many clubs this summer.

Arsene Wenger's decision to bench the striker for key games last season was questioned throughout the campaign and Emery has preferred Aubameyang up front so far this term.

"It isn't true", said Emery.

Wilshere commented before the game how he aimed to prove Emery wrong in dismissing the English midfielder's usefulness to his new regime, though Saturday's game only vindicates what many of Wilshere's critics believe about his lack of physicality and consistency.

"We need a little patience".

In an end-to-end start to the second-half, Pellegrini's men passed up another great chance to re-establish their lead. "He was sick yesterday, he spoke with the doctor and with me and we decided not to play today". I said, 'I want you focused only on training and only on the match, you show us the capacity to help the team. They don't want to lose the ideology of the "beautiful game". whatever that is. "We are very happy with him but every match is a chance to show this progress with consistency".
