Third day of deliberations set for Manafort fraud trial

Those pardons wound't be the end of the story, though, as Vance explained, as investigators could look at the circumstances surrounding them in the future.

The president didn't give an answer when asked if he is prepared to pardon Manafort, a veteran lobbyist who joined Trump's campaign team in March 2016 and spent three months as Trump's campaign chairman until mid August of that year.

An acquittal of Manafort would add to criticism that Mueller's investigation hasn't been worth the time and expense.

A Manafort conviction would allow Democrats and Mueller's supporters to say ending the investigation would be premature. In a status report filed back in February, prosecutors did a preliminary calculation of how federal sentencing guidelines would apply to Manafort if convicted on all charges.

The trial has not touched on Russian Federation or the 2016 election.

The Associated Press and five other media organizations are asking the trial judge in the financial fraud trial of Paul Manafort to unseal the closed documents being used in the case.

"When you follow the trail of Mr. Manafort's money, it is littered with lies", prosecutor Greg Andres said in his final argument earlier this week. "This is a case about lies". It's still possible that Manafort could be charged with state crimes, as long as they don't overlap with the federal charges he is now facing.

On Thursday, the jury asked for a definition of "reasonable doubt" and clarification on the law governing the reporting of foreign bank accounts but did not ask any similar questions on Friday.

The prosecution could request a mistrial, but such a maneuver was very unlikely, Ohlin said. The charges all relate to work Manafort did in Ukraine prior to his affiliation with Trump.

During his testimony, Gates, 46, acknowledged stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from Manafort and having an extramarital affair.

The foreign banking disclosure question goes to one of the defense team's most effective examinations of a witness in the trial.

US taxpayers must file foreign bank account reports if they had financial interests in and authority over accounts in foreign countries valued at more than $10,000.

Manafort's lawyers said he may not have believed he was required to file the form, as the companies were set up through his Ukrainian political consulting firm, DMP International, which he owned equally with his wife.

Meanwhile, in remarks to reporters at the White House, Trump commented on the trial. Ellis basically reiterated the instructions the jury had already received.

Judge T.S. Ellis III sent the jury of six men and six women back to resume deliberations Friday shortly after 9:30 a.m.
