Not much has been heard from the French World Cup victor since then although there were whispers that he was placed on a shortlist by Manchester United management as a backup should Mourinho decide to depart Old Trafford.

Now, according to French newspaper L'Equipe, Zidane has set his sights on a Premier League post and is especially keen on United.

Lingard enjoyed a loan stint at Brighton in 2013/14 season and returned to Old Trafford the next season and has been a regular member of the first team under former manager Louis Van Gaal and now Jose Mourinho.

The 25-year-old was one of three signings at Old Trafford this summer, and while much was made of United's late pursuit of a central defender, it is understood the club had not originally identified the need for a new centre-back when formulating their plans for the transfer window.

His relationship with the club's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has deteriorated and Mourinho cut a frustrated figure throughout the summer. It'll also give him the time to plan his next move.

However, the embattled United boss is adamant that last season's second place finish in the Premier League should be considered the club's biggest achievement in recent history.

In the past, Mourinho has seldom stayed longer than three seasons at a club, and Zidane is said to be very aware of this, which is why he is apparently putting his name in the hat should the role open up.

"When you look at Manchester City, possibly Liverpool, I don't think they [United] have the quality of those two teams at the minute", he explained.
