Clark's bail was set at $1 million dollars, and he could face up to life in prison if convicted.

A combination of state, federal and worldwide crews are struggling to establish 50 miles of fire line, Tisinger said - but with 93 percent of the River Fire under control, there is a tremendous sense of relief among those battling the flames. Clark has denied involvement in starting the fire, saying, "It's all a lie".

California Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for Orange and Riverside counties, and several school districts have canceled classes due to fire warnings and unhealthy air quality.

The fire has been burning since July 23. Eight people, including two firefighters, have already been claimed by this fire as it has spread to decimate more than 183,633 acres.

9, 2018, the Mendocino Complex Fire, which includes the River Fire and the Ranch Fire, is considered the state's largest wildfire on record, burning through 305,152 acres of land, with just 52 percent of it contained. It has burned a combined 336,399 acres and injured two firefighters.

The Holy Fire, which has burned 22,714 acres in Southern California and is 52% contained as of August 13, was captured on a timelapse video as it began as a waft of smoke and later evolved into a giant dark cloud.

It's a sad footnote to what's been a explosive summer of fires and smoke in Northern California.

The Carr Fire has been the deadliest of the wildfires to hit the West this season. It has burned 1,900 acres and was 25 percent contained.

Firefighters battling the Carr Fire further north - near Mount Shasta - did not have the same reprieve from scorching temperatures over the weekend, Jason Shanley, a Cal Fire spokesman told NPR.

"Wow. This used to be the neighborhood of some of my employees". He said crews were able to hold it back from the majority of the summer homes in that area, and they are working to control the fire "back around the the southern fork" of Lake Pillsbury. "My heart and gratitude goes out to all of them", Zinke tweeted. "I would describe him as a master of his craft".

"A lot of this is determined based on the drought, Mother Nature, what kind of winds we get", Wright said. Elsewhere, the Carr Fire has left a trail of destruction in Redding and the Ferguson Fire forced Yosemite National Park to evacuate portions of the park last month. It has lasted almost a month and is 83% contained.
