Kovacic's arrival paves the way for Chelsea to send Tiemoue Bakayoko on loan to AC Milan.

The 23-year-old France worldwide joined the Blues from Monaco last summer for £40m and started 25 Premier League games in his first season in the Premier League.

And Sarri has deemed Bakayoko surplus to requirements for this season at least with Matteo Kovacic having joined on loan from Real Madrid on deadline day to add to his options.

Willian made his first appearance for Chelsea since returning in yesterday's 2-0 Community Shield defeat to Manchester City at Wembley.

Although Maurizio Sarri's new Chelsea isn't expected to move for another transfer, a potential Thibaut Courtois move to Real Madrid would see the Blues moving for his replacement, now thought to be Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Liverpool have been the biggest spenders, Arsenal did their business early, Chelsea came up on the rails late while Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have endured frustrating summers.

Do you think the Croatian improves Chelsea's starting XI?

New Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri instead used Jorginho who joined the Blues from Italian club Napoli.

"I hope to be at the top of the potential of the squad in one or two months, but I don't know".

Bakayoko has played 43 times for Chelsea since signing from Monaco, scoring three goals and creating three assists in that time. I prefer to have 23-24 players, and three or four very young players.

It remains to be seen how quickly AC Milan will seal the deal.
