The 48-year-old mother and her 39-year-old boyfriend were sentenced to 12 years and 12-and-a-half years respectively for repeatedly raping the young boy and selling him to other paedophiles online.

A Swiss citizen and three German men who also abused the boy, now aged 10, were jailed between eight to ten years.

Berrin T., the mother, was sentenced to 12 years and 6 months in prison.

The mother had threatened her son with foster care if he did not comply to the abuse, the court had heard.

Six others are accused of being part of the paedophile ring in which the boy was abused. The court ruled that after serving his sentence, the man must also remain in preventive custody.

As well as pimping out the child, the pair also abused the boy repeatedly over a two-year period, which counted towards 60 separate identified acts of abuse.

The case has shocked Germany and sparked a row over how the couple were able to sell the boy for sex for thousands of euros even though they were already on the...

The couple were found guilty of rape, aggravated sexual assault of children, forced prostitution and distribution of child pornography between May 2015 and August 2017.

The couple have been ordered to pay the boy 30,000 euros ($35,000) in compensation, and 12,500 euros ($14,500) to the girl.

Katja Ravat, the child's lawyer, said the mother had not shown remorse at any point during trial, adding that she "had hoped that [the defendant] would make a statement, issue a written apology to her child, or at least explains to him why she did it".

In his verdict, Buergelin said Taha went along with the abuse at first so she would not lose Lais as a partner and later "for financial motives".

Local authorities have been accused of failing to protect the boy from his abusive parents, after officials removed him from his home, but returned him back weeks later.
