Trump Acknowledges Son Sought Clinton Dirt From Russians

In a tweet about that report on Sunday, Trump said, "This was a meeting to get information on an opponent, totally legal and done all the time in politics - and it went nowhere".

The meeting took place in Trump tower in NY, and the president originally claimed it concerned the issue of worldwide adoptions. This is not a routine thing politicians do to get information on their opponents.

He concludes the tweet by saying, "I did not know about it!"

Trump Jr went on to blame the Democrats and cable news outlets for blowing the meeting with the Kremlin-connected lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, out of proportion.

Donald Trump Jr's phone line disconnected on conservative radio host Laura Ingraham's show on Monday just as she was asking him about his Trump Tower meeting with Russians.

His newest tweet is the closest he has come to admitting the meeting's goal was to seek dirt on Clinton from the Russians.

However, he subsequently admitted he had agreed to the meeting after being told he would be offered information that would prove detrimental to Mrs Clinton.

Trump attorney Jay Sekulow told ABC Sunday that if the President is subpoenaed by Mueller, Trump's attorneys will attempt to quash it in court.

The president also referred to the reports that he is concerned about the potential legal problems his son might face as "fake news" and a "complete fabrication".

On Sunday, US media including the Washington Post, CNN and AP reported that Mr Trump was anxious Donald Trump Jr could be in legal trouble because of the 9 June 2016 meeting with Ms Veselnitskaya. The surprising claim in Trump's tweet is that it is legal for a campaign to get information from a foreign entity about a political opponent.

But at the same time, he still suggested that the meeting was, in large part, about adoption.

The report alleged Trump is increasingly anxious about his eldest son becoming ensnared in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

"I am comfortable in saying this: if there was evidence, strong evidence of collusion, I guarantee you it would have been leaked by now", the Republican senator said.

Abrams hinted that Trump's evolving story may be grounds for impeachment, citing a precedent set by Ken Starr during the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton in the 1990's.

He said he and other Trump lawyers have been discussing the details of a draft version of the letter in recent days and hope to send it to Mueller "sometime on Tuesday or Wednesday". "He should put Donald Jr. up for Russian adoption".

"You then misled the country about the goal of the Trump Tower meeting when it became public". "You have to know you are doing something illegal and the courts would have to consider the opposition research from Russian agents a "thing of value" for campaign finance purposes".

He defended calling the media "The Enemy of the People", and said journalists "purposely cause great division and distrust" and can "cause War!" Trump wrote. "They are very unsafe & sick!"
