Torreira in an interview basically confirming his move said: 'I would have been very happy to be able to return to Uruguay with my teammates, but this is a fantastic opportunity [to join Arsenal] and I do not want to waste it'.

The player's father Ricardo Torreira told Fox Sports Argentina that nothing will happen until after the World Cup.

Speaking to Fox Argentina, Ricardo Torreira said his son's move to the Emirates Stadium would go through "if nothing unusual happens".

And his current team, Sampdoria, agreed a £25million fee with Arsenal for a transfer during the competition in Russian Federation.

"Arsenal offered to do the medical examinations in Russian Federation but we decided against it because we felt it's inconvenient, it is not the right time".

"The deal is virtually done and only the arrival of Lucas is remaining", he added.

Jankto had previously been linked with Arsenal, but it now seems he will act as the replacement for Torreira, who is a reported target for Unai Emery in North London.

Torreira would be Arsenal's fourth signing of the summer after right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner, centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos and goalkeeper Bernd Leno. The 22-year-old defensive midfielder shone during Uruguay's World Cup campaign, helping his nation to the quarter-finals before their exit against France on Friday afternoon.

The Uruguayan is on the verge of completing his move to the Gunners, with a deal having been agreed for some time.

Those players not on World Cup duty have already returned for the start of pre-season training, with a first warm-up fixture set against Boreham Wood at Meadow Park on Saturday.
