Chelsea have agreed an initial loan deal to sign Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic with the option to make the transfer permanent for £53.5m next summer, according to Marca via TeamTalk.

Thibaut Courtois looks desperate to leave the club meaning Maurizio Sarri could well be on the lookout for a replacement.

In fact, reports suggest they may have already done just that.

The Croatia global is a sublime player but has world-class competition for a starting berth at Real Madrid - with Chelsea seemingly set to benefit.

The agreement between the clubs will be announced in the next few hours and Kovacic will soon depart for London to embark on his new adventure.

Lopetegui was asked if he had talked to Modric after his extraordinary World Cup, as the Croatian star led his country to the final where they ultimately fell to France.

Lopetegui insists that Kovacic has trained as usual and he, alongside compatriot Luka Modric, will enjoy playing at the Bernabeu this season.

"I've not seen that he's gone on strike", Lopetegui said. He's someone I hold in particular esteem, and who I am happy to have in the team.

Chelsea are reportedly set to snap up Tottenham Hotspur target Mateo Kovacic on loan.

25-year-old Croatia global Kovacic moved to the Bernabeu for £25 million in 2015 from Inter Milan, although rather unsurprisingly he has struggled to dislodge Los Blancos superb midfield triumphant of Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, and Casemiro.
