In an angry response, the USA president tweeted: "Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon".

"Lebron James was just interviewed by the dumbest man on television, Don Lemon", Trump tweeted.

At the end of the interview, Lemon challenged Trump, a move that perhaps invoked the Trump tweet.

Lemon's questions mostly focused on James's time off the court, covering the I Promise model inspired by James's childhood search of sanctuary away from crime and violence in Akron.

James received publicity during the week for opening his new school in Akron, Ohio.

Mr Trump has taken a harsh stance on the ongoing debate over players in the National Football League (NFL) who refuse to stand for the national anthem in protest against racial injustice and police brutality.

The comment came ahead of an important special election for a House seat in James' home state, and could add a meaningful obstacle to Republican efforts to retain control of Congress. He said he felt Trump was "using sports to kinda divide us".

President Donald Trump slammed basketball star LeBron James on Friday night over his appearance on CNN this week.

Trump puts children in cages.

"Kind of?" Lemon said, followed by a chuckle.

While Trump insulting his critics is nothing new, this instance is particularly notable for its weird timing.

"I like Mike!" he wrote. "Going to White House was a great honour until you showed up!" By the way, all-around he's better than Michael Jordan. It's one of the more admirable charity initiatives in recent memory and has been lauded by people across the political spectrum.

Lemon nor James has responded to Trump's tweet.

The four-time NBA MVP, 33, branded the USA leader " a bum" after he rescinded an invitation for NBA champions the Golden State Warriors to visit the White House past year, amid doubts over whether some players - including star man Stephen Curry - would attend. Trump subsequently said neither team would be invited.

And in February, James used an expletive to claim that Trump does not care "about the people".

That observation echoed Saturday. "I think at times he uses black athletes (as scapegoats)". "I believe there's someone else out there".

The President ended his tweet with the seemingly unrelated exclamation of "I like Mike!"

CNN also interjected: "Sounds like @FLOTUS had the remote last night".
