"The hacking is the crime". The timing of the president's statements in Doral, Florida, urging the Russians to go find the missing emails [of Hillary Clinton] or hack into the DNC computers.

Giuliani told CNN he was "happy to tell" Mueller that Trump "wasn't at the meeting".

Trump and his lawyers are right that the term "collusion" isn't a precise one when it comes to US law.

In an an interview with The New York Times last December, Trump repeatedly asserted that his campaign did not collude with Russian Federation, while noting briefly that collusion is not illegal.

Appearing on Fox News' Hannity, Giuliani said a potential Trump-Mueller interview is "highly unlikely" because he would be walking into a perjury trap. "He said, No. 1, there is no collusion, No. 2, collusion is not a crime, but even if it was a crime, there was no collusion".

"Right now I'm telling him 'no way, '" he said, asking why Trump would testify in an investigation that has "no legitimacy".

Mr Trump's tweet comes after his lawyer Rudy Giuliani told Fox News "collusion is not a crime".

Manafort's trial, in which he faces charges on 18 counts of violating tax and banking laws, is a high-profile test of the Mueller team's investigation into Russian election interference in 2016.

US President Donald Trump took to Twitter to say that collusion isn't a crime, and that he never colluded with anyone.

"As a matter of law, the central question is not whether members of the Trump campaign coordinated or colluded with Russia, but whether they conspired with Russians to break a criminal statute or they broke the law themselves", the Council of Foreign Relations wrote in a background paper.

Giuliani called the disgraced former Trump Organization attorney one of the "biggest liars in America".

President Donald Trump is a man of many catchphrases. He said there was no collusion.

Mr. Giuliani was dismissing these allegations when he argued that collusion can't be criminal.

Giuliani added that he had said Trump wasn't in the room for that meeting because there were in fact two different meetings.

While the main areas of Mueller's investigation are Russia's actions during the 2016 presidential election and any attempts by Trump to obstruct justice, none of those topics are expected to come up in Manafort's trial.
