3 people dead, 7 injured in New Orleans shooting

The New Orleans Police Department said that Saturday night's shooting on South Claiborne Ave.is believed to be gang related.

"Two bodies could be seen on the ground Saturday night in front of Chicken & Watermelon", which is a restaurant located "in the 3400 block of South Claiborne".

Three of the seven injured people were taken by ambulance to University Medical Center's trauma center, police said. He said they "appeared to have fired indiscriminately" into the crowd but then "stood over one individual and fired multiple rounds".

Seven people were injured in a shooting a few miles from the city's French Quarter, and were taken to area hospitals in varying conditions.


Harrison spoke with family members and friends at the scene of the "volatile and tense situation".

"A lot of people were here tonight", he said.

"This is an extremely tragic incident", the police chief said at a press conference early Sunday. "A lot of people saw and heard what happened", Harrison said in asking for assistance in solving the crime.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell condemned the violence in a statement released soon after the shootings.

Several people were being treated at the scene. Those offering information will be kept anonymous and do not have to testify in court to receive reward, according to Crimestoppers.

"This has to be personal", he said.
