United boss Jose Mourinho said this week that Italy worldwide Darmian can leave Old Trafford "but not at any price". The former Monaco man has a year left on his contract and the club hold an option to extend it by another 12 months, effectively keeping him tied down until 2020.

Asked about interest from Inter, Darmian told Sky Italia: "Surely there is some truth".

And he replied: "If you look to the players Chelsea and Liverpool have in pre-season, especially these two teams, also Arsenal, I think if you compare you see the difference of the situation".

"Mourinho's comments about Pogba not having "given his best" for United and having a propensity to "lose focus" and "lose concentration" over the course of a season don't make any sense", said Parker.

"Yes, that's what I want [to leave]", Darmian said.

However, the United boss would prefer to keep the versatile Italy defender for the opening game against Leicester on August 10 after Antonio Valencia was sent home from the club's U.S. tour with a torn calf muscle and new £19m signing Diogo Dalot was ruled out until September as he recovers from a knee injury.

With Martial already absent from the squad, United boss Mourinho also confirmed both Antonio Valencia and Nemanja Matic will most likely be absent for the rest of the tour of the United States. "I would [like to] get two more players".

"He is on holiday and I don't know if he fancies being back before that to put himself available for the team - or if he prefers to stay on holiday".

The Manchester Evening News though, report that Mourinho is upbeat about the chances of United signing the player, as he believes that a repeat of the Robin Van Persie deal that saw the Dutchman swap Arsenal for United.

"I don't have the majority of the players that are going to be in the squad on August 9 when the market closes and we can make it official for the season". "I know what you can do - you can be the best but you've just got to work on a couple of things".

Mourinho admits it could be useful to keep Darmian around as he stands to have selection problems at right-back at the start of the season.
