He was among four injured in the attack and succumbed to his wounds at the hospital.

On Sunday, the TTP claimed responsibility for the attack.

In the three weeks leading to the vote, at least 179 people have been killed in attacks across the country, but mainly focused on the western Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

Poll candidate injured in suicide blast in Pakistan ahead of elections

Critics have long accused Pakistan's powerful military, including its Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) agency, of meddling in politics and judicial affairs, a charge it denies.

Following Sunday's attacks, Pakistan's election oversight body postponed the balloting for the provincial assembly seat that Gandapur was contesting. "ISI people get their choice of benches formed in the courts, cases are marked", he told lawyers in the garrison city of Rawalpindi. According to latest ECP rules, nobody would be allowed to cover elections until unless he/she displayed the accreditation card.

The nation has been on edge over Wednesday's elections that will decide Pakistan's new prime minister after a string of similar suicide bombings this month against political candidates.

Pakistan's army has said it will deploy more than 370,000 troops on polling day - around five times as many as for the 2013 poll when the country's security was generally considered to be much worse.

The independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) warned there were "ample grounds to doubt" the legitimacy of the elections and criticised "blatant, aggressive and unabashed attempts to manipulate the outcome of the upcoming elections".

Khan, the leader of PTI party calling for a crackdown on corruption and the creation of the welfare state, has also received support from cricketers outside the Pakistani border. Hailing him for winning the championships back in 1992, he asserted that Pakistan will become a great democratic country under Khan's leadership.

BehindYouSkipper became one of the country's top trending hashtags as celebrities and former cricketers came to Khan's support.
