He was also integral to Liverpool's run to the Champions League final in May, but although Klopp was full of praise for the 29-year-old he also said there is still room for improvement.

Reaching the final caps a hugely impressive 2018 for Lovren, who came through a hard run of form for Liverpool to play a key part in reaching the UEFA Champions League final in May.

"Modric is the best middle three player in the world and if we win this World Cup, he deserves the Ballon d'Or", he said.

Former Liverpool full-back and ESPN FC analyst Steve Nicol feels Lovren is too prone to avoidable errors to be considered one of the elite defenders in the game.

'From my point of view, I had people saying I had a hard season, but I don't agree with that.

'I took Liverpool to the final of the Champions League and now with my national team we are in the final.

"I am perfectly ready and fit, and I can say the same for my teammates".

"It's something we'll never forget".

Lovren will be hoping he can avoid the same fate as Henry by leading Croatia to World Cup victory against France this Sunday. "We showed our character, we showed that we deserved to be in the final and people should respect us", he said. People should respect us.

"We've had this weight on our shoulders for 20 years".

And he is delighted that this current Croatian generation have finally lived up to, and now surpassed, the standards of the 1998 team which reached the semi-finals.

But after the break, Croatia took control, equalised through Ivan Perisic and then won the game with Mario Mandzukic's extra-time strike.

"We have the chance to do something better, and hopefully we can do it on Sunday".

Lovren also called for Croatia team-mate Luka Modric to receive the highest individual award in world football, the Ballon d'Or.
