1 person dies in wildfire near California-Oregon border

Jones said as summer goes on the monsoon season will cause fires to taper off in the Southwest states, and they'll pick up in northern states like Montana.

In a Friday afternoon press conference, Lopey said the fire had destroyed 40 structures.

Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors chair Ray Haupt says the blaze moved so fast it quickly reached Hornbrook, a community of about 250 people about 14 miles (22 kilometers) south of the OR border.

"It moved so fast I'm not sure how much time lagged between the evacuation and when it hit Hornbrook", he said.

OR authorities urged hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts to avoid forests near the state line.

Wildland firefighters have enough to worry about, but Thursday a tornado briefly touched down just south of the Weston Pass Fire, then while receding back into the cloud it moved directly over the fire. Evacuations and road closures were in place in that area as well. Dry fuel in the timber remained a concern as well, he said.


Another wildfire in the San Bernardino National Forest was holding at 1.5 square miles and forced evacuation of about 700 homes in the mountain community of Forest Falls.

Washington state fire crews left this weekend to help fight flames in Colorado. The governor also declared a state of emergency for the county.

Duchesne (doo-SHAYNE') County Sheriff's officials say the fire near Strawberry Reservoir now is 30 percent contained, up from 25 percent on Saturday.

County firefighters led Ishu and Laura Rao to search for Laura's wedding ring in their demolished home of three years.

One of Colorado's most popular national parks has banned all campfires to avoid starting any new wildfires.

Thousands have been ordered to evacuate their homes, with the fire only a mile from the city's downtown area, said Santa Barbara County Fire Department. They say it is just smouldering and rain over the coming days should keep it from spreading.

A wildfire burning through drought-stricken timber and brush near California's border with OR has killed one person and destroyed multiple structures as it grows largely out of control, authorities said Friday.

The blaze consumed an estimated 20 structures, including homes and other types of buildings.

Highway 12 is closed from mm 7 to mm 22.5.
