Paulinho and Thiago Silva scored a goal each Wednesday to give the five-time champions a 2-0 victory over Serbia and first place in their group.

Having opened his Russian Federation 2018 account with the second of Brazil's two late goals in Friday's 2-0 win over Costa Rica, Neymar was again impressive.

His performance was even more impressive given he suffered a broken leg in March that was expected to rule him out of the World Cup.

"I never like to speak about myself, it is not something that goes through my head", he told reporters at Brazil's base camp last week.

The victory, and Switzerland's 2-2 draw with Costa Rica, meant Brazil finished top of Group E on seven points, two ahead of the Swiss who will face Sweden in the last 16.

Brazil got the breakthrough soon after on 36 minutes, when Paulinho latched onto a lovely through ball from Philippe Coutinho, dinking the ball past the onrushing Stojkovic and into the empty net. Serbia ended third on three points and are eliminated along with Costa Rica.

The Serbs almost scored in the 61st when Brazil goalkeeper Alisson pushed the ball into the path of forward Aleksandar Mitrovic, whose shot bounced off the keeper and was bound for goal before being cleared by Silva.

Serbia needs to pull off a big result against Brazil if the European side is to reach the round of sixteen for the first time as an independent nation.

Needing to avoid a loss to be sure of advancing, Brazil fielded the same XI as their 2-0 win against Costa Rica as Tite looked for improved understanding among his starters.

Serbia repeatedly struggled to contain Brazil's fleet-footed attack.

Serbia were then punished for their profligacy on 68 minutes when Thiago Silva powered in a header at the near post from Neymar's corner.

Four years ago, Paulinho was part of the Brazil team that was humiliated at home in a 7-1 drubbing by Germany in the semifinals.

And when it looked Serbia were growing into the game midway the second half, Brazil snuffed the life out of coach Mladen Krstaji?'s boys.
