The 43-second clip, which was recorded during a baptism in France and originally shared on Reddit, shows a priest clutching onto the face of a boy as he sits in a woman's arms and wails. "Here. And then, we are going to embrace the little guy, because he will have become a little more Christian".

Other French-speaking Reddit users have tried to translate what's being said in the video.

Having seen enough, a man thought to be the child's father steps in and tries to remove him from the situation - only for the priest to grip the boy by his neck.

The shocking video of the scene which happened in an unknown French speaking country has gone viral and has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times.

Eventually, the priest grabs the baby by the chin and delivers a firm slap across the baby's face.

"I'm trying to figure out why no one slapped the old man back", one viewer posted.

The priest then attempts to pull the child closer before a bearded man grapples him away.

The horrified parents are at first anxious when the priest holds the baby in a vice-like grip to stop him from wailing. "I would have pulled baby away until he calmed down", another wrote.

"This is disturbing, and has really upset me", another tweeted.

A couple presumed to be the parents is heard gasping at this in the video.

Orthodox baptisms are usually done "forcefully" but many online commentators have criticised the priest's rather rough approach.
