Musa was the hero for them with two beautifully taken goals while Sigurdsson missed an opportunity to get his team back in the game when he sent his penalty over the bar. That came moments after he hit the crossbar with another shot and less than half an hour after he put Nigeria in front with his first strike. The second goal came in the 75th minute, when after a break down the wing, Musa cut inside and waltzed around the goalkeeper before firing the ball into the net.

Nigeria have beaten Iceland 2-0 in Group D at the Volgograd Arena, lifting Argentina's hopes of surviving at the World Cup as well as their own.

A penalty was eventually awarded via VAR, only for Gylfi Sigurdsson to blast his spot-kick over the bar.

Iceland can qualify if it beats Croatia in Rostov-on-Don on Tuesday in a match that takes place at the same time as the game between Nigeria and Argentina.

Halldorsson had to tip a deflected Wilfred Ndidi shot over the bar, Leon Balogun header narrowly over and Musa struck the bar shortly before he finished in style for his and and his team's second goal.

"Moses and Musa are the kings of the Nigeria vs Iceland game as they displayed mastery today".

"It is unfortunate that we lost to Nigeria in spite of the way we planned for the game". However, after such a disciplined performance they will fancy getting a positive result against their West African opponents.

With Croatia heading the group on six points Nigeria knew a second defeat would mean elimination and Iceland started brightest after coach Heimir Hallgrimsson changed to a 4-4-2 from the 4-5-1 he had used in the 1-1 draw with Argentina.

Argentina and Iceland both have one point after drawing their opening game in Moscow.

In the first half, Nigeria were sluggish and Moses really struggled to stamp his authority on the match, though Nigeria heavily neglected using the width of the pitch, which in turn nullified Moses influence on the pitch.

Ahmed Musa's two goals led Nigeria to victory over Iceland.

Iceland has met Croatia several times in recent years, including in World Cup qualifying. He played a critical role in Nigeria's possession play and also helped out with some stunning tackling and ball-winning in the centre of the park.
