After Argentina and Iceland played to a 1-1 draw in their group D match on Saturday, criticisms of Lionel Messi's performance have rained down. "[Angel] Di Maria did not beat his opponent once, the midfielders did not support him".

"I won the World Cup in 78, Maradona in 86 and Messi is yet to do that". On the show, Cuccittini said that it's Messi's dream to win a World Cup, but that the pressure he's under is enormous.

"I would give everything for this to be his World Cup".

Argentina's coach urged fans on Wednesday to stop blaming Lionel Messi when games do not go to script and instead appreciate all their captain has done for the national side over the years.

'Luckily, people love him a lot and they transmit that to him and he values this a lot.

"We were quite upset about not having won the match but I think".

It was the latest in a series of low points with the national side for Messi, who suffered defeat in three major finals between 2014 and 2016, leading him to briefly retire from global duty. I told him to enjoy himself, to live in the moment and be happy.

Ivan Rakitic, Messi's teammate at Barcelona and part of Croatia's powerful midfield with Luka Modric, has no illusions about the Argentine's ability on the field. Messi, as a vote, deserves 5. We can all miss a penalty.

A social user uploaded a photo of Messi being held down by the Iceland players, while another user opted to use a cartoon of Messi playing better for his Nou Camp outfit than Argentina. They would have opened a little more and we could have found more spaces. I have no doubt that a goal from the penalty kick would have changed everything. To start with winning is always important, now we have to think about Croatia.

Messi endured a tough opening game in Russian Federation, including seeing a second-half penalty saved in the shock Group D draw.

"We have to look at what we need to correct from the Iceland match, but we can't dwell on it", Argentina defender Gabriel Mercado said.
