Despite some early pressure from Peru, France soon settled into the game and in the 13th minute Raphael Varane's header off Antoine Griezmann's corner narrowly missed the far post.

Peru will be hoping to give their supporters, a reported 40,000 of whom have travelled to Russian Federation, something to shout about in the final group match against Australia, who can still qualify ahead of Denmark with victory in Sochi.

Peru made two changes at the break, bringing on Anderson Santamaria and Jefferson Farfan for Yotun and Rodriguez, and they were nearly level within five minutes as Pedro Aquino's shot from 25 yards beat Lloris but hit the outside of the post.

Peru: Gallese 7, Rodriguez 7, Trauco 6, Cueva 7, Guerrero 7, Ramos 6, Advincula 7, Carrillo 7, Yotun 6, Flores 7, Aquino 7.

But they were subdued in the second half, suffering frustration in the closing minutes when Blaise Matuidi shot just wide and Giroud had an effort blocked that ballooned over the top of the goal.

It was a lone goal from Kylian Mbappe that was the difference.

- France captain Hugo Lloris is the seventh player to reach 100 caps with France.

Still, France appeared to be the more unsafe team.
