Almost 2,000 Children Have Been Separated From Families at U.S. Border

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a crackdown on immigration with the zero-tolerance policy in April, requiring the criminal prosecution of any immigrant crossing the border illegally, including parents seeking asylum with their children.

"The full impact of policy initiatives are not fully realized for 2-3 weeks following public messaging - however, some migrants already underway may temporarily halt to determine the effects of the new policy", the document states.

"What the administration has made a decision to do is to separate children from their parents to try to send a message that if you cross the border with children, your children are going to be ripped away from you", Collins said.

In May, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a "zero tolerance" approach towards migrants and refugees who cross the USA southern border without documents, promising to prosecute those who did so. "As former United States Attorneys, we also emphasize that the Zero Tolerance policy is a radical departure from previous Justice Department policy, and that it is unsafe, expensive, and inconsistent with the values of the institution in which we served", they write. Trump has repeated the claim, despite evidence to the contrary, that Democrats in Congress could end the separation policy if they wished.

A growing chorus of faith leaders - the Rev. Franklin Graham, son of Billy Graham; Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner of the Religious Action Center; Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops - has said that the administration's practice of separating children from their parents is immoral.

"Orderly and lawful processes are good in themselves", Sessions continued.

In these circumstances, and as long as a unified family would not present any immediate danger to the children, separating families should not occur. "That does not exist, that's not a policy, that's not something that DHS does", a DHS official said.

We can and we should protect our borders, but we must do it in a way that is humane and reasonable.

"Our government has the discretion in our laws to ensure that young children are not separated from their parents and exposed to irreparable harm and trauma".

Ex-White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate how the Federal Bureau of Investigation was "weaponized" against President Donald Trump during his 2016 campaign.

Sanders was ridiculed on social media for her Biblical assertion, with critics citing various passages that call for humane treatment of people, particularly children, and some tweets cheekily asking what the Bible said about adultery. "If you afflict him at all, and if he does cry out to Me, I will surely hear his cry; and My anger will be kindled, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless". The agency, he says, "initially seeks to determine if the child has a parent in this country; and if not a parent, a close relative; and if not a close relative, a more distant relative or a family friend".
