He came up against an inspired Cecchinato though and wasted three set points to drag the match, played out in a soccer-like atmosphere on Court Suzanne Lenglen, into a decider.

Zverev produced some stunning tennis in the closing stages of a dramatic fourth-round victory and will next face Dominic Thiem who reached a third successive quarter-final in Paris by seeing off Japan's Kei Nishikori 6-2, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4.

Djokovic made a slow start in a one-hour opening set, which took longer than the entire match between American Sloane Stephens and Estonia's Anett Kontaveit that had preceded it on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Paris: World number 72 Marco Cecchinato became the first Italian man in 40 years to reach a Grand Slam semi-final on Tuesday with a breathtaking 6-3, 7-6 (4), 1-6, 7-6 (11) victory over 12-time Major victor Novak Djokovic.

"Maybe I'm sleeping. It's wonderful, it's unbelievable for me".

Fourth seed Grigor Dimitrov is out of the French Open after a third-round defeat by Fernando Verdasco.

Seventh seed Dominic Thiem muscled his way into the fourth round of the French Open, putting out Italian claycourt specialist Marco Berrettini 6-3 6-7 (5) 6-3 6-2 to set up a tie with Nishikori.

On Tuesday, Cecchinato politely declined to speak about it, preferring instead to focus on his achievement, how he had dismantled the game of former world No 1 Djokovic, who was distraught after the match, mumbling short answers in a press conference he ended after little over four minutes.

"I don't know. I don't know what I'm going to do".

Her next outing will be a battle of wills against compatriot and friend Stephens, who has emerged victorious in both of their previous meetings as professionals, most recently beating Keys in the final of last year's U.S. Open.

Two years ago, his career was nearly derailed when he became embroiled in match fixing allegations.

Read on as we provide highlights and reaction from a whirlwind day of quarter-final action at Roland-Garros.

"Obviously. making the fourth round four times or whatever is pretty good, but to finally get over that hump of quarter-finals feels very nice", she said.

Like her compatriot and good friend Keys, US Open champion Stephens is in the quarter-finals for the first time and hoping to set up a repeat of last year's final in NY.

Next up for the Sicilian is Austrian Thiem, the last man to beat claycourt master and 10-times French Open champion Rafa Nadal on his favourite surface.

The Russian also reached the Indian Wells final earlier this year, and has now won six times against players ranked in the world's top two.

The 23-year-old Svitolina, who trains at Roland Garros and was a quarter-finalist in 2015 and 2017, had been tipped as one of the potential winners for the second year in a row after winning the Italian Open, but she never found her groove. Thiem is 4-2 against Zverev so far in their careers, but Zverev has won two of the last three.

The Serbian has now made the second week at Roland Garros for the last nine years in a row.

"First week, my goal is to get to the second week", said Keys. "I know it's hard right after the match".
