This is according to the Manchester Evening News, who report that Brazilian worldwide, Fred could be signed by the start of next month, leaving no room for complication once the World Cup begins in Russian Federation. The fee could top £50 million with add ons.

Scampering across the Etihad pitch, snapping at heels, resisting the press and driving at the sky blue-clad opponents, one five-foot-seven Brazilian bounced into the brain of the Man City boss Pep Guardiola. They need to reinforce their squad this summer to close the gap on champions Manchester City, who cantered to a league title with a 19-point lead by the end of the campaign.

"You know that we had negotiations with Manchester City this winter, and there was an official offer - a very big figure", Akhmetov told Futbol 1.

Manchester United have made enquiries about Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld and Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred.

Fred played 37 matches for Shakhtar this season, scoring four goals and making six assists. He is a midfield conductor and will fit in well alongside Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba in the middle of the park for United.

Jose Mourinho's Manchester United experienced a lackluster 2017-18 season, despite finishing second in the league and getting to the final of the FA Cup.

However, in Fred's case, United could take advantage of Brazil's presence in England next week to complete a medical should the transfer progress positively.

United to sign backup striker?

The stage is set for Mourinho and Fred next season, now let's see if they will shine.

Di Marzio also claims United are looking at Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic.

However, it now seems Manchester United have managed to pip the newly crowned Spanish champions for the signing of Fred.
