Kia confirms 48-volt mild hybrid Sportage is coming

Kia has announced it will be installing a diesel mild-hybrid powertrain in models in its range.

"Kia's mild-hybrid powertrain is created to fit seamlessly into consumers' lives, with no plug-in recharging required". In "motor", the powertrain reduces engine load and emissions, and in "generator", it harvests kinetic energy during in-gear deceleration and braking, using it to recharge the batteries.

The mild-hybrid starter-generator also extends combustion engine "off time" by shutting down the engine when coasting to a halt, rather than waiting until the vehicle is stopped like most start-stop systems.

The carmaker says the technology "offers a compelling cost-to-performance ratio compared to full hybrid powertrains".

Kia claims that the compact nature of the EcoDynamics+ means the technology can be integrated into existing vehicle and powertrain architectures without impacting practicality or packaging.

In the diesel Sportage, Kia says the 48-volt system improves fuel efficiency by 4 percent in Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedures and 7 percent in the New European Driving Cycle tests.

The Korean auto maker has confirmed a new 48-volt battery with starter generator unit will feature on vehicles in Europe from this year, beginning with the Sportage SUV.

Kia's mild-hybrid technology, which it calls 'EcoDynamics+' will be offered first in the Kia Sportage SUV, before appearing in the Kia Ceed hatchback in 2019 and then in other models in the range. The powertrain will also be adapted for use in petrol engines.

This battery is also able to connect to the vehicle's on-board power supply, meaning the regular 12V battery and the starter motor can be smaller.

Kia is introducing EcoDynamics+ 48V mild-hybrid diesel engines to their United Kingdom range later this year in a bid to reduce emissions.
