Mourinho expects Pogba, Rashford to stay at Man United next season

Jose Mourinho has said he expects Paul Pogba to be a Manchester United player next season, adding that Marcus Rashford would not be loaned out to boost his prospects of first-team football.

"In two years, we managed to have him, even with the important injury he had at the end of last season, but we had him for lots of matches, being important, probably going to the World Cup [with Gareth Southgate's England]".

"I think the way I work with my assistants, I give them very good conditions for their evolution and I think Michael can be very positive for us".

While Mourinho's words seem positive, they still leave room for inference that he can not guarantee that the player himself wants to stay.

"I trust some [players] over others that could bridge that gap. Some of the players I am totally convinced are going to make it, some others I have good hopes that they are going to make it and some others I don't believe they are going to make it". By contrast, the comments are hardly as convincing as when he was recently asked about club player of the year David De Gea's future. I know them better than anyone. "Big and small, I don't like it [those terms], but that's the way I can express it".

"Unless you can do that, and you go in the direction of the ideal squad, you have to keep players you don't love and players you don't totally believe have the level of the squad".

Mourinho criticised the attitude of his players after the shock 1-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion last time out, but he has been impressed with their response in training. He's a proper man. Football is not full of them, and not just football, society's not full of them, so when you find one of them, you have to value and you have to keep. Unless you can do that, and you go in the direction of the ideal squad, you must maintain players you do not love. Unless you can do that, and you go in the direction of the flawless squad, you have to keep players you don't love and players you don't totally believe have the level of the squad. And some others, I don't believe they are going to make it. In my squad, I have some players where I'd love to have greater than what I have.
