Reacting to the news, senior IT Ministry officials in New Delhi said the Indian Government will continue with its enquiry into the Cambridge Analytica data leak issue.

"Despite Cambridge Analytica's unwavering confidence that its employees have acted ethically and lawfully, the siege of media coverage has driven away virtually all of the company's customers and suppliers", the company said in a statement.

In a statement on Wednesday, Facebook said: "This doesn't change our commitment and determination to understand exactly what happened and make sure it doesn't happen again".

She told Channel 4 News: "We will continue our investigation, both our civil investigation and our criminal investigation".

Bannon, who later left the company, did not respond to requests for comment.

British corporate records show that Nix is also director of a company called Emerdata Ltd. that was incorporated in August 2017.

In 2013 Dr. Aleksandr Kogan, a research associate at the Department of Psychology of Cambridge University built a 3rd-party profiling application to use for his research.

Cambridge Analytica successfully created a smokescreen over its real time operations that ranged from potentially manipulating US voters to help US President Donald Trump's campaign win the 2016 presidential election, establishing potential links to Russia-to hushing up the fact that several political parties in India have used its services. Among its leading clients then was a super PAC controlled by Republican John Bolton, now Trump's national security adviser. Earlier today, Facebook's Chief Privacy Officer Erin Egan announced that the company is planning to roll out a new tool that will allow users to see which websites and apps have gleaned information about them.

Mr Zuckerberg has said it was a mistake to rely on Cambridge Analytica to delete tens of millions of Facebook users' data and has apologised for the "major breach of trust". Zuckerberg testified before the US senators in April.

Questions have also been raised around the role the company played in Donald Trump's presidential campaign and campaigns for Britain to leave the European Union, as well as in India and beyond. The company claimed that "parallel bankruptcy proceedings will soon be commenced on behalf of Cambridge Analytica LLC and certain of the Company's USA affiliates in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of NY". Facebook has over 20 crore users in India.

The ousted Cambridge Analytica's CEO, Alexander Nix was listed as a director of Emerdata in February, until the firm made a decision to severe ties with him in March. Cambridge Analytica has denied the charges. Additionally, parallel bankruptcy proceedings will soon be commenced on behalf of Cambridge Analytica and certain of the Company's U.S. affiliates in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of NY.
