Real reach third straight European final

Bayern will need a strong performance to overturn the 2-1 deficit in front of a strong and boisterous home crowd.

Real were first out the blocks in the second half, as Benzema capitalised on a bad mistake from Sven Ulreich to bag his second of the night and put Madrid back in control.

In a tense last 30 minutes in which a goal would have sent Bayern through to the finals, Real Madrid again rose to the occasion to ensure a third straight trip to the Champions League's final game. The ball again fell to a Bayern player as James Rodriguez came streaking in at point blank range, but he agonizingly blazed the shot over the bar, a strikingly bad miss.

"The closing down from Marcelo is embarrassing really". Bayern looked like they were to retake the lead at the Bernabeu when Tolisso slotted a ball through to Robert Lewandowski, but the Polish forward failed to control the ball and went down under the challenge of Ramos. But James subsequently ballooned the ball over the crossbar.

James almost got his second goal about ten minutes later as he wound up at the top of the goal, but defender Raphael Varane made an important stop by throwing his body in front of James' attempt.

Bayern was sitting pretty there with 87 more minutes to get another goal as long as it didn't concede more than one.

Ronaldo scored a phenomenal overhead kick in the quarter-finals, as Real defeated Juventus and, though the legendary Brazilian won the World Cup along with numerous other trophies, he insists even he has not tried to score such a goal.

Bayern then found their second wind, with Alaba and Franck Ribery causing constant problems for Modric and Lucas Vasquez.

BT Sport pundits Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand were not impressed with Marcelo and Ramos' roles in Bayern Munich's early opener through Joshua Kimmich.

Madrid responded with a double change as Gareth Bale and Casemiro entered the fray.

Navas made a great save from Tolisso and James nearly bagged himself a second.

The last ten minutes saw a barrage of chances from the German side, who were trying everything.

What it does not reveal is how great a scare they got as Bayern Munich came within a whisker of upsetting the odds in a gripping second leg.

"He has a lot of resources, when the game gets ugly he appears".
