A tussel ensues between the mother and the lover in which Rachel doesn't seem in a mood to back down.

"We've been dating for over a year now, and I think it's about time people met my handsome girlfriend", the character Nick says in the opening footage.

Meeting your boyfriend's family and friends for the first time is always a nerve-wracking experience. Indeed, while Rachel only suspected that Henry's family was well-to-do, her very first trip to his home in Singapore to meet his family revealed a comically-obscene level of wealth (they keep a giant swimming pool filled with synchronized swimmers).

"You really should've told me you're like the Prince William of Asia", says Rachel to her boyfriend Nick.

"I know this much".

Emerging as the industry grapples with problems of representation, the major studio-made Crazy Rich Asians is an outlier.

All the single women of Singapore's upper class are after Nick, so Rachel attempts to navigate around the drama while others try to bring her down.

Not surprisingly, given Nick's family status and good looks - he's described as "the Asian Bachelor" by one of Rachel's friends - Rachel finds some serious opposition to their relationship, including from his own mother, Eleanor, played by Michelle Yeoh.

The 36-year-old actress joined co-star Henry Golding on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to talk about the groundbreaking romantic comedy which features an all-Asian cast.

The film co-stars Gemma Chan, Lisa Lu, Awkwafina, Jimmy O. Yang, Chris Pang, Sonoya Mizuno, Jing Lusi, Ronny Chieng, Pierre Png, Fiona Xie, Kheng Hua Tan Harry Shum Jr. and Ken Jeong (the Hangover Trilogy).
