He immediately announced that the ANC would consider bestowing on the struggle icon its highest award, Isithwalandwe Seaparankoe, an honour reserved for those who have made an outstanding contribution and sacrifice to the liberation struggle.

Magashule said Mama Winnie has touched the lives of many and he said he is happy that you can find young artists in Soweto to help draw the wall of remembrance.

"Let us honour her memory by pledging here that we will not betray the trust of her people, we will not squander or steal their resources, and that we will serve them diligently and selflessly", the president said.

"The pain inflicted on her lives forever even after her death".

"Equally, big Mama, some of those who sold you [out] to the regime are here and are crying louder than all of us who stood by you", said Malema.

"She was one of the most profound leaders of the ANC", said 53-year-old mourner Brian Magqaza. In his tribute he singled out the now disbanded United Democratic Front, who distanced itself from Madkizela-Mandela during her controversies in the 1990s and members of the ANC's women's league who called Madkizela-Mandela a criminal.

Some ANC members started attempts to drown out Malema by booing and singing, but he continued and called on Soweto residents to never forget her name.

British model Naomi Campbell pays tribute at the funeral of struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto, South Africa, Saturday, April 14, 2018.

"She is truly the mother of South Africa", Jackson told journalists on Friday.

"In apartheid South Africa, the combination of patriarchy and racism together meant that black women confronted enormous obstacles from the cradle to the grave - making her own achievements all the more exceptional", he said on Friday at a memorial in NY, not mentioning Nelson Mandela at all.

For years, she was routinely harassed by apartheid-state security forces, imprisoned and tortured.

He said Madikizela Mandela provided leadership at the most hard time and never demanded a reward.

During Mandela's 27-year incarceration for his fight against apartheid, Madikizela-Mandela campaigned for his release and for the rights of black South Africans undergoing detention, banishment and arrest.

Malema, who sat with Madikizela-Mandela's family and other dignitaries, responded to Ramaphosa with a smile.

Every generation is gifted one or two people who shine as brightly as the brightest stars.

"We must continue to touch Ma Winnie's wounds and acknowledge her pain and pass on the story of her suffering so that it may always be known that Ma Winnie was a giant, a pathfinder and a healer".
