Taliban attack Murdered 10 police in Herat

Meanwhile Kabul based TOLO News network reports that Ali Shams Dost, the district governor of Khwaja Omri district of eastern Ghazni province was killed along with seven policemen in na Taliban attack early Thursday.

He said 25 Taliban were killed.

"They (Taliban) came and set fire to the district governor's office, killed 30 people, took some equipment of the district with them".

A resident of the area, Hassan Ali, said many security forces suffered casualties in the overnight attack.

Khwaja Omari also lies close to Ghazni city, raising fears of an assault on the provincial capital.

"All parties to the conflict in Afghanistan must do everything in their power to protect civilians from harm", said Ingrid Hayden, the secretary-general's deputy special representative for Afghanistan. The Taliban also seized weapons and ammunition during the raid, he added.

He also confirmed the government's statement that the assault killed three top local officials - the district's governor, intelligence chief and deputy police chief.

Ten police were killed and four wounded in the Shindad district, where fighting with the militants lasted for hours, Shukrullah Shaker, the district governor, said on April 13. The attackers planted mines to prevent government reinforcements from coming and quickly took responsibility for the attack.

He said eight government security forces were wounded in the fighting.

Around 45 insurgents were also killed and several others wounded, he said, adding: "Taliban have set alight the district office complex, but reinforcement arrived at the district and now the situation under control".
