With that result, Chelsea rose to fifth place in Premier League's standing table with 60 points, while Southampton is in 18th place with 28 points, meaning it may be among the teams to suffer relegation to the lower division.

Goals from Dusan Tadic and debutant Jan Bednarek had put Saints on the way to a crucial three points but Giroud headed a previously listless Chelsea back into a game that had appeared nearly out of reach, Eden Hazard levelled shortly afterwards and then the France hitman struck again - all inside an eight-minute spell. They played so well for the first 69 minutes and deserved to lead 2-0, but the substitute Olivier Giroud inspired another insane comeback in this memorable week of football.

Meanwhile, Southampton manager Mark Hughes was unhappy that Marcos Alonso had escaped a red card after a high boot caught Shane Long on the back of his calf at the end of the first half.

Chelsea were not finished though, and scored their third three minutes later when Giroud stroked a loose ball into the bottom corner to break Southampton hearts.

"The most important thing is to show some character".

"We changed something in the second half but the difference was the approach, the desire, the will to fight to try not to lose another game".

"After the first half I was very disappointed, but I'm the first to take responsibility, because I'm the coach of this team".

"As long as mathematically it's possible, we will believe".

Conte swiftly responded by hauling off the disappointing Alvaro Morata and Davide Zappacosta for Pedro Rodriguez and Giroud.

"I'm very proud of what we did today".

"I'm very happy for him", Conte added when asked about the former Arsenal man's performance.

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte refused to comment on Alonso avoiding any punishment for the tackle, but praised his players for shaking off a woeful first-half showing at St. Mary's.

Southampton who are yet to win any Premier League game on home soil in 2018 looked like they were going to get it right against the Blues.
