Russia Accuses UK of Faking Chemical Attack in Syria

"The United States estimates that (President Bashar) Assad has used chemical weapons in the Syrian war at least 50 times", said Nikki Haley, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Moscow also said it was calling an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council, where it is a permanent member, to discuss the "aggressive actions" of the USA and its allies.

Trump is pressing for a more aggressive strike on Syria than U.S. military chiefs have recommended as he adopts a tougher stance toward Russian President Vladimir Putin, U.S. officials told Reuters.

The US, Britain and France say they launched airstrikes against Syrian chemical sites after obtaining "proof" that poisonous gas was used last weekend in Douma, killing 41 civilians.

One senior official said Trump has asked his military to consider options that would include punishing Russian Federation and Iran, Syria's main foreign backers, in part over the president's growing level of exasperation with Putin. The medics, however, said none of the patients had any symptoms of chemical poisoning, according to the statements.

"We continue to observe unsafe military preparations for an illegal act of force against a sovereign state", Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told the Security Council.

USA officials suspect the Russia-backed Assad regime is behind the attack.

Britain's U.N. Ambassador Karen Pierce, meanwhile, rejected a charge by a Russian defense ministry spokesman that Britain was involved in staging a fake chemical weapons attack in Douma.

Trump administration officials told The Associated Press in February they believed forces loyal to Assad might have been in the process of working on new or more refined chemical weapons. Putin and Macron instructed their foreign and defense ministers to maintain close contact to "de-escalate the situation", the Kremlin said.

In April previous year Trump ordered Tomahawk strikes on the Shayrat Airbase in response to a similar chemical weapons attack on rebel-held Khan Sheikhoun.

Since Saturday, when images of ashen toddlers struggling for breath emerged after the alleged attack, there has been a sustained military buildup in the eastern Mediterranean.

"The immediate priority is to avert the danger of war", said Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia.

She accused Russian Federation of defending Syrian President Bashar Assad and failing to ensure that Syria's chemical weapons were destroyed as the Assad regime had pledged in 2013. Syria's civil war, which began as a popular uprising against Assad, is now in its eighth year.

Apart from Macron's phone conversation with Putin, NATO members Germany and the Netherlands have said they will not take part in any military action.
