The shooting occurred on Tuesday morning at the Great Mills High School in Lexington Park, Maryland.

A 19-year-old allegedly killed 17 - mostly students - at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on February 14. Sheriff Cameron said Deputy Gaskill fired at the shooter, and nearly simultaneously, the shooter also fired.

One of the shooter's friends, 14-year-old Jordan Hutchinson, and his mother dropped off a condolence card at the Rollins home.

But it could have dragged on longer and proven deadlier were it not for the rapid response of a school resource officer. He was taken to MedStar St. Mary's Hospital and is in good condition, hospital officials said.

"We should be having a school walkout to commemorate all the kids that got to walk out of school today thanks to Deputy Blaine Gaskill and his gun", wrote Twitter poster Emily Horst Weaver, whose picture shows her firing a gun.

The shooter had a prior relationship with the female student, Cameron said.

A teenager wounded a girl and a boy inside his Maryland high school on Tuesday before an armed school resource officer was able to intervene, and each of them fired one more round as the shooter was fatally wounded, a sheriff said.

Rollins was later pronounced dead.

If authorities confirm Gaskill fired the fatal shot, it may be the only known instance in which a school resource officer, or SRO, typically a law enforcement member assigned to a school, killed a student gunman during a shooting.

Laryr Hogan didn't mince words at a press conference Tuesday afternoon after a school shooting in St. Mary's County, Maryland.

A female student is in critical condition and a male student is in stable condition. His letter was posted on local news site The Bay Net. They were told to report to Leonardtown High School. The NEA is steadfast in our support of the students, staff and families of Great Mills High School.
