Though Carrey never directly named his inspiration, he wrote on Twitter that the image was the portrait of a "monstrous" "so-called Christian whose only goal in life is to lie for the wicked". Carrey captioned it: "This is the portrait of a so-called Christian whose only goal in life is to lie for the wicked".

Actor Jim Carrey's latest piece of artwork bears an eerie resemblance to the White House press secretary, the New York Daily News reported.

His tweet caption reads: "If you liked my last cartoon you may also enjoy..." Previously, he had tweeted a picture of Marco Rubio with literal blood on his hands, one of Paul Ryan branded a "creep" and Trump as a caveman.

Many other Twitter uses responded to Carrey's post by defending Sanders, and criticizing Carrey for personally attacking her.

"I'd bet my bank account that if Jim Carrey had made a portrait of Hillary Clinton instead of Sarah Sanders, the Trumpers would be loving it". "Monstrous!" Carrey didn't name names - but Twitter got the idea all the same.

However, many also took to Twitter to praise Carrey's work, saying it was a "good likeness" of Sanders.

Carrey has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration and has tweeted similarly unflattering portraits of Republican figures in the past.

Carrey, who began painting six years ago to "heal a broken heart" following his split from Jenny McCarthy, primarily paints in his studio in downtown Manhattan.

"And this is one more reason that I'm done with Hollywood", one person commented.
