Florida State handles Missouri, 67-54, in first round

The league prides itself as the home of rugged, physical play, but the Tigers were visibly upset with how some games were called late in the regular season.

Sunday, we get games like UMBC (!) vs. Kansas State, North Carolina vs. Texas A&M and Syracuse vs. Michigan State, among others.

However, it was No. 11 seed Xavier beating a No. 3 seed FSU 91-66 nearly a year ago to the day.

But the Seminoles got it together to score 15 consecutive points as Missouri ran out of steam.

Michael Porter, Jr., a freshman small forward for Missouri, is considered one of the nation's best at his position and a potential National Basketball Association lottery pick.

Forrest led the way with a near triple-double, finishing with eight points, six rebounds and eight assists. (Florida State's lead) ballooned back up to 15.

Cofer scored on a tip-in, starting an 11-0 run capped by Savoy's 3-pointer. When Braian Angola knocked down a 3 from the corner - off a terrific pass from Terance Mann - the Seminoles had a 22-point advantage. However, Missouri's stay in the SEC tournament was just as long as Florida State's, losing their opening matchup in the 2nd round to #12 seed Georgia. Porter had the ball stolen from him with 7:55 left in the first half and followed that up just over a minute later with an airball on a jumper.

Missouri threw its best punch to start the second half, outscoring Florida State 24-8 in the first 10:07.

"We went through a few possessions where they scored like, bang, bang, bang, and it was right back to 13", Jontay Porter said. "We just kept our poise, amped our energy up on the defensive end and it created our offense". As a team, Florida State is scoring 81.8 points per game on 47.4% shooting from the field, 35.1% from behind the arc and 68.5% from the foul line this season. Guard Jordan Barnett was suspended from Missouri's first-round game after being arrested for driving while intoxicated last week.

The victor of Saturday's 2:30 p.m. (St. Louis time) game at Stanford plays Monday against the victor of No. 4 seed Stanford against No. 13 Gonzaga. Because despite being a lock to declare for the NBA Draft after the tournament, Porter, Jr. has barely played this year. The freshman and preseason All-American said he probably won't make his decision on what's next for a little while. "That really hurt. I wouldn't say we were out of gas, we just stopped being disciplined and stopped playing as hard as we had to get the lead to six". "I've got to do what's best for me".

Yes, the team has been good, 10-8 in the conference, 20-12 overall and Porter, Jr.'s younger brother Jontay has been a fan favorite and complete player revelation, but still.

"That's just what it is, when you're coming off of injuries, getting the rust off your body, getting the flow of games, getting the flow of situations", Martin said. Assuming the Tigers beat Florida State, they are unlikely to come out victorious against (presumably) Virginia in the second round and it's not worth the risk of reaggravating an injury.
